Went to see SATC on Friday night and was delighted to see New York Public Library making a guest appearance in the movie!
I had no idea that they’d filmed scenes in the library or that there’d be a dialogue between two of the main characters discussing the pros and cons of borrowing books! I just love references to libraries in popular culture; especially in high profile movies.
Perhaps some of those women who copy everything that Carrie Bradshaw does will feel inspired to pop into their own local library to check out the romantic love letters collections! Could public libraries really be the new Jimmy Choos?
Hmm, I’m not sure…
It is raining in Seattle right now, and will be raining all week, and we expect a major run on our library’s ‘chick lit.’
well only if their local library looks anything like New York Public Library otherwise I think it might not feel like such a glamourous outing
you still won’t catch me smelling a library book like Carrie did ….no way hosey!
Aaah the beautiful New York Public Library is a sight to behold.
I was watching The Day After Tomorrow last weekend which NYPL also plays a huge part in, the protagonists decamp there and survive the onslaught of an ice age by keeping warm by burning library books.
You’ll be glad to know, I’m sure, that the Gutenberg Bible is saved along with some Friedrich Nietzsche texts in favour of burning huge volumes of an undisclosed law index.
If it wasn’t for the bespectacled librarian giving an impassioned speech about the beginning of reason I’m sure they would have been burned in favour of keeping Jake Gylenhaal warm!
Johanna – you should visit some of the Carnegie libraries in Glasgow- they’re not NYPL, but they’re still impressive! Certainly a novel location for a wedding…;-)
The comment from Scottish Libraries reminded me of a brilliant piece of fiction called The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, which features scenes of book burning in Nazi Germany. Leisel Meminger, now there’s a character who knew the true value of books…!
